In the vibrant car culture of Johannesburg, South Africa, Ian Murugan stands out not only for his striking 1996 Nissan Skyline GTR R33 V-Spec but also for his passion for automotive customization.
Having owned this iconic car for nine years, Ian’s journey with his GTR is a testament to his creativity and dedication to making it uniquely his own.
A Unique Vision
Ian’s love for cars began long before he laid eyes on his Skyline. With the R33 GTR already a head-turner, he was determined to make it stand out even more. “I wanted something different from the other R33 GTRs,” he explains.
The car came with a rare 400R bumper from Japan, and Ian decided to embrace that aesthetic while adding his personal twist.
His choice of a bluish pearl paint was a deliberate break away from the standard colors typically seen on GTRs, making his car a true standout and unique.

Key Modifications
Ian’s modifications reflect both performance enhancement and aesthetic appeal.
The heart of his GTR is the stock RB26 engine, complemented by the original twin turbos. To optimize its performance, he installed an A’PEXi FC ECU, allowing for more precise tuning.
While he plans to upgrade the turbos in the future, the current setup combined with 95 pump fuel and a mixture of race fuel ensures that the car runs efficiently.
The exhaust system was another area Ian focused on. He upgraded to a 76mm twin downpipe leading to an 86mm single pipe and an HKS Super Drager back box, providing not just a performance boost but a thrilling sound that enhances the driving experience. “You cannot have a GTR and run a stock exhaust,” Ian says.
To improve cooling, he replaced the radiator with a three-core model designed for the R33 GTR, resulting in significantly better temperature management. For the drivetrain, a racing button clutch was installed, enhancing the car’s responsiveness during spirited drives.
The car’s suspension has also been upgraded with HKS coilovers, giving it a lower stance and improved handling. While the stock Brembo brakes initially performed well, Ian upgraded to Brembo pads for better stopping power, especially under high-stress conditions.
These changes, alongside a significant power gain from the exhaust, contributed an extra 20 kW to the GTR’s output, though Ian is excited to see what the final figures will be after the A’PEXi ECU is finely tuned.

Challenges and Triumphs
Customizing a car is rarely a straightforward journey, and Ian faced challenges along the way. He recalls the frustration of having the car resprayed, with the paint shop initially mixing the wrong color.
However, Ian’s patience paid off, as he worked closely with the panel beater to achieve the perfect pearl finish he envisioned.
Driving Experience
For Ian, driving his GTR is more than just a means of transportation; it’s an experience filled with joy and nostalgia. He recalls a standout moment when he attended the “German vs Japan” car show shortly after acquiring his car.
A young boy approached, awestruck, and expressed his admiration for the GTR. Ian graciously allowed him to sit in the driver’s seat, creating a memorable moment that captures the joy of car culture.

A Reflection of Personality
Ian’s GTR mirrors his extroverted personality, attracting attention and sparking conversations wherever he goes. “The car draws a lot of attention, and it complements my love for socializing and talking about cars,” he shares. The unique pearl paint that shifts hues in different lighting is a reflection of his vibrant personality.
Future Plans and Community Involvement
Looking ahead, Ian has exciting plans for his GTR, including upgrading the turbos, intercooler, and adding a boost controller. He actively participates in the car community, belonging to various clubs and attending events. However, he notes the importance of choosing the right gatherings, as not all events foster a positive environment.

Advice for Future Modifiers
For those considering a journey into car modification, Ian’s advice is simple but crucial: “Patience and time. Take your time and do it the way you want it to be done, and be prepared to spend money.” His story serves as a reminder that good things take time, and hurrying might result in disappointment.
Ian Murugan’s 1996 Nissan Skyline GTR R33 V-Spec is more than just a car; it’s a canvas for his creativity and a symbol of his dedication to automotive culture. With his unique modifications and engaging personality, Ian not only enhances his driving experience but also contributes to the vibrant community of car enthusiasts in South Africa.
